Capture North

Capture North is an international collaboration project aimed at strengthening the development of carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) through knowledge sharing, partnerships and concrete activities across the Atlantic.

The project builds on the long-standing engagement of Green Hub Denmark and Clean in Alberta, Canada. Since 2022, this collaboration has brought together companies, research institutions and public authorities around CCUS-related activities. With Capture North, the efforts in Canada continue while the project is expanded with a new focus on California to identify emerging trends, solutions and regulatory approaches – and translate these experiences into a Danish context.

Background and rationale

CCUS is a key instrument in achieving Denmark’s and the EU’s climate targets. However, CCUS development in Denmark is still constrained by limited regulation, financing and access to large-scale test and demonstration facilities. In regions such as Alberta, Canada, CCUS markets are more mature, supported by clear policy frameworks, strong ecosystems and an established industrial base.

Capture North aims to improve Danish stakeholders’ access to:

  • Knowledge from mature CCUS markets and regulatory frameworks
  • International networks and partnerships
  • Experience with technology development, testing and demonstration
  • New business models and export opportunities

From international experience to Danish CCUS development

Alberta is among the global frontrunners in CCUS and plays a central role in Canada’s ambition to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent by 2030. Here, carbon capture is not only a climate tool, but also a driver of industrial development and international trade.

Through Capture North, experiences from Canada – and, in the future, also from California – are translated into inspiration for Danish companies and knowledge institutions. The project addresses the entire CCUS value chain, from capture and storage to the use of CO₂ as a resource, including the development of green and circular carbon for the process industry and new products.

Activities and next steps

In 2026, Capture North will continue with new transatlantic activities. A key milestone is a planned delegation mission to Alberta in September 2026, offering Danish stakeholders direct access to North American companies, research environments, and public authorities. Preparations will begin in the first quarter of 2026, and the project will continuously share information about upcoming activities and participation opportunities.

Project management and partners

Capture North is led by Green Hub Denmark and implemented in collaboration with Clean and Triangle Energy Alliance.

Strategic partners include the Embassy of Canada to Denmark and Alberta Innovates. The partnership is also in dialogue with relevant stakeholders in California.

Interest and participation

Companies, knowledge institutions, and other stakeholders with an interest in CCUS are invited to contact Clean to learn more about Capture North and opportunities to engage in the project – including participation in upcoming delegation missions and transatlantic activities.

Clean serves as the main point of contact for dialogue on project activities, partnerships, and potential participation.

Capture North is supported by the Danish Energy Agency as part of efforts to strengthen Danish CCUS development and international collaboration.
