From waste to disposable cups – and eventually to nutrition
The project “From coffee waste to coffee cup” aims to transform the waste material from the coffee industry, coffee grounds, into 100% naturally compostable disposable coffee cups. This initiative represents an innovative approach to sustainability, where waste becomes a resource.
The overall goal of the project is to create an efficient and sustainable solution for handling the coffee industry’s waste while simultaneously producing functional and environmentally friendly disposable cups. This helps to reduce the consumption of virgin materials, such as plastic and paper, and promotes a circular economy. Furthermore, the project wants to demonstrate the potential of using natural resources to create valuable products and nourishment for the earth.
From waste to disposable cups
Grounded specializes in turning coffee grounds into 100% naturally compostable disposable coffee cups. Made from a mix of 50% coffee grounds and 50% bioplastic, these cups are designed to last a whole day without going soft. An essential feature of these cups is their ability to break down under natural conditions in approximately four months, where they act as fertilizer and nourishment for the soil and plants.
At present, Grounded has limited production aimed at smaller customers, but there is significant demand of over 10 million cups from customers such as Novonesis, Ønsk, Coffee By Storm and COOR, as well as interest from large companies such as Costa Coffee (Coca-Cola). and Peter Larsen Coffee (Löfberg Group).
